Eating

New Haven is a foodie’s paradise for every budget. First, please note that a light breakfast, lunch, and the Friday night banquet dinner are INCLUDED in your NASOH conference registration.

Beyond that, New Haven apizza (pronounced ah-beetz) is generally regarded as some of the best in the US. It’s unique, coal-fired ovens give it a thin, chewy, and crunchy crust with just the right amount of char. Try the white clam pie or the tomato pie for true New Haven classics. You’ll want to go to Modern Apizza, Sally’s Apizza, or Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletano for the best New Haven-style. Zeneli’s on Wooster Street is more traditional Neapolitan and so delicious.

Located within an easy walk or short ride of the conference venue are everything from gourmet seafood (Shell & Bones) and a plethora of Latin American food trucks along Long Wharf Drive to Wooster Street Apizza (Sally’s and Pepe’s), gourmet Italian (Brazi’s) and Swedish meatballs (IKEA). Hotel Marcel’s restaurant and bar (BLDG) offers delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner courses. Conference registrants will receive a full list of city-wide drink and dining recommendations for all budgets and tastes. Rest assured, you’ll eat well in the Elm City!

Parking and Getting Around

For those coming to New Haven by car, parking is plentiful and free at both Hotel Marcel and La Quinta. For those driving locally without hotel reservation, or for those with accommodations farther afield, there is free parking near the Canal Dock Boathouse along Long Wharf Drive and also in the IKEA parking lot.

Hotel Marcel offers a 20-person shuttle that can take guests anywhere in downtown New Haven (a 5-10 minute drive from the conference venue) free of charge.

Field-Tripping

Included in your NASOH conference registration will be options to choose one of several field trips, the details of which are still tentative and being worked out. Options may include:

  • Oystering history tour of New Haven neighborhoods concluding at Copps Island Oysters in the Fair Haven neighborhood on the banks of the Quinnipiac River.

  • A harbor sail aboard the freedom schooner Amistad, a recreation of the original schooner that figured in the 1839 revolt and whose African participants were imprisoned on the New Haven Green.

  • A tour of the terminals of the Port of New Haven.

  • A tour of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library to include manuscript and artifact holdings in maritime history.

Doing

New Haven is a medium-sized city with big-sized fun and culture to offer visitors. Young families will enjoy Yale’s newly-renovated Peabody Museum of Natural History, which is free and open to the public. Kids will also enjoy It Adventure Ropes Course located inside Jordan’s Furniture just down the street from the conference venue. Families should also take advantage of the Shoreline Trolley Museum in neighboring East Haven where visitors can ride historic trolleys from the 1920s through the beautiful salt marshes of the Connecticut shoreline. Museumgoers will want to visit Yale’s Center for British Art, the largest collection of British art outside the UK, as well as Yale’s Art Gallery and its Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library where you can see everything from the Gutenberg Bible to Audobon’s Birds of America and an original copy of the Declaration of Independence in a stunning modernist design of sunlit granite panels. All of these museums and libraries are free and open to the public. So, while you NASOH, bring your family to enjoy all that the Elm City has to offer!
