James C. Bradford Lecture in Martime History

The James C. Bradford Distinguished Lecture in Maritime History invites a maritime historian or archaeologist with a record of scholarly excellence to address NASOH's annual conference during the closing banquet and awards ceremony. This lecture is named in honor and memory of Dr. James C. Bradford, a long-time member and officer of NASOH and a professor of history at the United States Naval Academy and at Texas A&M University. During the course of his career, Dr. Bradford mentored many undergraduate and graduate students and edited or co-edited several book series in maritime history and archaeology. He authored or edited many influential volumes of maritime history including The Papers of John Paul Jones, Quarterdeck and Bridge, Admirals of the New Steel Navy, and America, Sea Power, and the World, among others. In the spirit of Dr. Bradford's vast and diverse interests in the fields of maritime history and archaeology, the following scholars have delivered lectures:

2025 Dr. Craig L. Symonds, "Annapolis Goes to War"

2026 Dr. Nancy Shoemaker, "The Whale Commons: Stranded Whales in New England History"
